Sharpen Physician Eating Disorder Program - Now Required Training!

Working with our partners at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS) alongside national researchers in eating disorders, we enhanced Sharpen's 5 hour training on eating disorder awareness and prevention to bolster medical student and physician best practices specific to pediatric / primary care settings. The program has just been expanded as required training for medical students at all VCOM campuses and for physicians in residency at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

Awarded over $75,000 in grant funding from Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Foundation and VCOM, the project included an array of partners who participated in the development of comprehensive training modules focused on eating disorders and comorbidities (trauma and suicide). The program can be offered for continuing education credits for physicians and medical providers, enhancing their knowledge and skills in managing these critical health issues.

Experts, researchers and individuals featured in the new "ED 201" film that is a part of the 5 hour physician eating disorder training course.

60 physicians / medical students have been trained in the model to date and the program is expanding as a regular part of VCOM third year psych program and into SRHS first year residency.  Trainings were also provided to the Community Health Worker Network. A total of 66 community health workers / members registered for the workshops and a total of 24 participants completed pre-post- evaluations under shared IRB.  Preliminary data found 100% of participants strongly agreed / agreed that they learned something new and that the workshop was a good use of time.  All data are currently under analysis with anticipated peer review journal publication(s) in 2025.

Partners in the effort included VCOM, Resiliency Technologies, SRHS Community Health and Medical Education divisions.  In addition, we are grateful to the many participating individuals, clinicians and researchers from collaborating institutions such as:

  • UC San Diego Eating Disorders Center for Treatment and Research

  • UNC Chapel Hill Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders

  • UC Berkeley Department of Psychology

  • Harvard School of Public Health STRIPED
